The new CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, in is his maiden interview:

Culturally, I think we have operated as if we had the formula figured out, and it was all about optimizing, in its various constituent parts, the formula. Now it is about discovering the new formula.

This is key to innovation - knowing when to optimise and when to innovate. One way to do that is to use the knowledge funnel to understand that.
