Missions for me are strategy. There are many ways to think about strategy.
I see that sometimes we are stuck with specific frameworks and want to use that one all the time.
As Gerald Midgley would say about Pluralism in Systems Thinking, we have to the same approach in Strategy. There is no one right framework.
For example, I like the Playing to Win framework from Roger Martin a lot and use it all the time. However, there are some contexts in which others are more useful.
I will deep dive into each in the coming weeks and months but here is a quick compilation of five frameworks and the contexts in which you can use them.
1. If you start with a possibility or Vision + Choices, the Playing to Win framework is great.
2. If you start with a problem, the challenge based framework of Richard Rumelt is brilliant.
3. If you are in a chaotic situation and want to move fast, the Simple Rules approach may be the way to go.
4. If you are all about Purpose and Social Innovation, then Peter Drucker’s “Five most important questions” will bring clarity and action.
5. If you are looking at big mega trends and want to see where the possibility spaces are for systems change, Peter Drucker’s Theory of the Business is a fantastic one.
