Tan Sri and Greater India

I came across this Prof from Malaysia and he had a prefix Tan Sri”. I was absolutely curious. Sri is a Sanskrit word used extensively in India as a sign of respect. Digging deeper into it it was clear that it was of Indian origin and Tan Sri’ is the second highest civilian title conferred to individuals in Malaysia.

This rabbit hole continued into looking at what happened in the past. If you have been to Bali or to Malaysia or Thailand you can see the Indian cultural influence there.

Greater India.

In the 1920s some Bengali historians tried to understand the historical influence of Indian culture and expansion of Indian kingdoms and they came up with the idea of Greater India” that captures this.
