But Etsy’s offering may have a deeper significance: it is only the second (and by far the largest) public sale of shares in a B Corporation, a designation that implies a company is committed to a social mission as well as making money. Etsy says it aims to “reimagine commerce in ways that build a more fulfilling and lasting world”. The number of B Corps has been growing steadily in recent years; proof that becoming one does not preclude a public listing may encourage many more mission-driven entrepreneurs to structure their startups as B Corps.
