Oops! I Dropped the Lemon Tart

Everybody says we need to learn from failure. But how does it look like in real life? I was watching the new Netflix documentary called Chef’s Table. The first episode is about Massimo Bottura, who is the chef patron of Osteria Francescana, a three Michelin star restaurant based in Modena, Italy and is considered one of the top restaurants in the world. In the documentary his Suis chef, Taka, recounts a story of how Taka was making 3 lemon tarts and one of them accidentally fell. Taka was very dissapointed and wanted to do hara kiri” on himself. In comes Massimo, looks at the fallen lemon tart on the ground and sees a new item in the restaurant. He created a de-constructed lemon tart from this failure.

lemon-tartlemon-tart Taka says that this experience really taught him the value of what it means to learn from failure. One of the tentpoles of innovation is this, learning from failure. Massimo is a genius. When did you last learn from your failure? or even better invented something new from that.
