This classification from Marty Neumeier totally makes sense in the context of innovation.
Depending on the quality of your knowledge and the level of your imagination, originality can fall into four quadrants: 1) ideas adapted from the same domain, 2) ideas adapted from a different domain, 3) ideas that are new to yourself, and 4) ideas that are new to the world.
When people ask me is it innovation when its new to the organisation but no new to the world, this kind of classification totally makes sense. It helps in making the distinction in terms of originality but uses the human capabilities of knowledge and imagination that is most important for creating it.
