Deming is well known to think about the whole, the system in which organisations create value. His purpose definition aligns to that.
The aim proposed here for any organization is for everybody to gain - stockholders, employees, suppliers, customers, community, the environment - over the long term.
It seems commonsense at one level and really profound at another. It is important to differentiate that from a “specific mission” of an organisation which will be uniue to each organisation.
From his book New Economics, page 2:
In order to improve living in a material way as well as in a spiritual way, people must trade goods and services with other people.
This is a very sensible way of thinking about it. By doing commerce we improve lives.
