A crash course in Human Centred Design for Intrapreneurs
“Everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones. The intellectual activity that produces material artifacts is no different fundamentally from the one that prescribes remedies for a sick patient or the one that devises a new sales plan for a company or a social welfare policy for a state.” –Herbert A. Simon, The Sciences of the Artificial
The world is changing rapidly. In this changing context we are effected by trends and actions beyond South Australia and uncertainty looms large. It is increasingly difficult to act as if the world is linear and predictable, trying to ignore or remove uncertainties with little effect. At the same time we need new ways of working - a creative approach to problem solving and a de-risked experimental approach to the bureaucracy.
How do we do that? At Business Models Inc, we have been exploring these challenges in the corporate, public, NFP and startup space for more than 8 years. Strategic Design is the approach to dealing with uncertainty, enabling strategic decision making and at the same time being creative in your approach. It goes beyond service design and explores the work at the Policy and Systems level.
Strategic Design is a problem-solving approach for complex contexts that enables innovation. It starts with fundamental questions about context, aspirations and the nature of the problem. By understanding the changing context and explore the future we look for the edge. We combine this with understanding people, explore a range of creative solutions and through a hypothesis driven validation process we de-risk and finally scale the solution.
You get a peek into the Design a Better Business book and award-winning the double-loop process to strategic design.
